New LFD Policy Limits Websites
During the first week of July, 2008, the administration of the Lexington Fire Department released a new version of the LFD standard operating procedures. Included in this document was a new policy that severely limits members of the LFD from taking photos while on duty and from publishing photos on websites. No member of the LFD is allowed to take photographs while on duty without the prior authorization of the Chief and the incident commander of the specific incident. Then, even if pictures are captured with permission, they immediately become the property of the LFD administration. In theory, photos that somehow would make it through this maze of procedures would then have to be authorized for publishing by a member of the LFD executive staff. What is missing from the policy is any procedure for applying to be a firefighter/photographer, what happens to photos that become the property of the LFD, and what procedure is to be followed to get a photo approved for publishing. The predictable result of this new policy is that the information and photos that had been flowing onto the numerous "unofficial" websites has nearly completely stopped. It is this policy that threatens the future of this and every other non-city-owned website. It is as a result of this policy that I am largely unable to update this site and that major changes to this site are coming.
Changes Coming
As a direct result of the new LFD Policy 100.75, I am forced to make changes to this site. I am no longer permitted to publish photos and therefore the following changes will be made:
-The "News" page will be removed and replaced with a "What's Happening" page that will feature very short one-line notes that will keep those who are interested with up-to-date goings-on.
-Any pictures that are received from non-LFD members will be posted on the "At-Work Pics" page or the "Historic Pics" page.
-Unofficial Run Stats will be updated once monthly, during the first week of the month.
-Pictures of newly delivered apparatus will be posted as soon as I can obtain a photo from an outside source.
-Depending on how the site does under the new changes will determine whether this site is renewed year to year.
-What's New-
